…icro-decision after micro-decision, one notices a pattern that most designers likely recognize: the persistent prioritization of business goals over human-centered design goals. People hate website pop-up ads, but the company does it anyway because it slightly increases revenue. The change to the company’s data policy compromises people’s privacy but allows the company to monetize that data, so they do it and hide it in an end-user agreement nobody reads. Psychological tricks are used to get struggling working-class people to spend a little bit more because it’s good for the company’s profits, without regard to the customer’s needs. This was not an exceptional experience for me. It was the norm.
