How to “villagize” & live a happier life

Tips from a Caribbean village girl living in Canada

I am a village girl at heart; no matter where I go in the world, I cannot help but come back to thinking about the magic of village living, especially in the Caribbean. It evokes a feeling of safety, enveloped by family and generational familial relationships. For me, it will always be home. You will not read this in western health magazines but it is also a place where it is not uncommon to live to to ripe old ages and children are bound to return from their town and city lives to visit the grands. And so, it is not uncommon to hear people say “ I am going back to the village.” Elsewhere, I have captured the essence of what that means: to go home to the village. I wrote:

“When Caribbean and African people tell you they are going back to the Village, it evokes a profound sense of returning to one’s roots, to a place where life is intertwined with the rhythm of the earth and the community. It speaks of a journey back to a simpler time and space, where the bonds of family and tradition are woven into the very fabric of daily life.
