From bondage to capital: uncovering the economic legacies of inequality

Today, I found myself feeling a little drained after the usual round of obligatory calls and texts to wish everyone a Happy New Year. It is only the first week of January, and as expected, most conversations center around resolutions and fresh starts. Personally, I have never been one for traditional resolutions.

For the past ten years, I have focused more on what I can learn or see with fresh eyes — I suppose you could say I prefer forward-looking goals over rigid promises. And for the record, I am not giving up wine, jellybeans, or gummies anytime soon. This mindset, I think, also led me back to school in 2018 to pursue and complete a PhD — a long-standing goal I had put on hold to raise children, manage my career, and juggle, well… life.

I share this as a prelude to something that has been pressing heavily on my mind. In the midst…
