Life is a journey fraught with change and adaptation, yet some changes leave us bewildered; I know, I too have felt it just wise to give up and go someplace that isn’t here, wherever that was at certain points in my life. Recently, I had an encounter that profoundly unsettled me, leading me to reflect deeply on why people become jaded as they move through life. It was a moment where, momentarily, I embraced someone else's humanity and asked internally, with an inaudible gasp:

What happened?

Recently, I found myself running errands in the ethnic enclave of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), a nostalgic haven where immigrants had once converged over three decades ago. It was a place suffused with the aromas of home and the familiar faces of yesteryears, where community bonds were forged over shared stories and ethnic delicacies.

Amongst the bustling streets, I unexpectedly encountered the mother of an old high school friend, a figure from my past whose home had been a sanctuary of laughter and warmth during the tumultuous years of my parents’ trials and tribulations…
